Top 5 “Pop” Songs

(And before you all start groaning, these don’t have to be recent pop songs)

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia describes “Pop Music” as:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_music

Pop music is generally described as very commercial friendly, marketable and memorable, with either vocals, lyrics, instruments, or a combination of all three creating catchy choruses or verses. Pop music is also known for its ability to attract listeners through its versatile sound since it pulls from a plethora of musical influences. It can be also fair to say that pop music is predominantly image driven, especially through the subject matter of the lyrics, live performances, music videos, and other forms of exposure which makes it favourable and unfavourable to whoever is the listener.

Based on the above description…

The following selections from my collection are based on the notion that they are “catchy” tunes for me. Usually, whenever these songs pops up in my playlist, I have the song in my head for many hours .. even days! If that’s not pop .. what is?

Memorial: Soul Legend Wilson Pickett Dies

Rolling Stone : Soul Legend Wilson Pickett Dies

Wilson Pickett

Legendary singer succumbs to heart attack at sixty-four

Legendary soul singer Wilson Pickett died of a heart attack today in Virginia at the age of sixty-four.
The singer, who earned the nickname “Wicked Pickett” due to his fiery vocals and masculine persona, was best known for such high-energy soul hits as “In the Midnight Hour,” “Mustang Sally” and “Land of 1000 Dances.” As a performer and interpreter, Pickett was generally considered to be the equal of such great soul men as Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.

Born in Prattville, Alabama, on March 18, 1941, Pickett honed his vocal style singing gospel in Southern Baptist churches. After moving to Detroit in the late 1950s, Pickett joined the Falcons, whose membership also included such future soul stars as Eddie Floyd and Sir Mack Rice. He sang lead vocals on “I Found a Love,” a gospel-tinged ballad that became a national hit in 1962, and left shortly thereafter to go solo.

In 1965, Pickett signed with Atlantic Records. His stint with that label marked the commercial apex of his career; backed by guitarist Steve Cropper and some of the top session musicians from Muscle Shoals and Memphis, the singer recorded more than thirty R&B hits, including “634-5789,” “Land of 1000 Dances,” “Mustang Sally,” “Funky Broadway,” “In the Midnight Hour” and even a surprisingly soulful cover of the Archies’ “Sugar, Sugar”.

Pickett fared less successfully after leaving Atlantic in 1972, but he continued to perform until 2005, when health problems forced him off the road. His most recent album, 1999’s It’s Harder Now, received rave reviews, three WC Handy Awards — including Best Soul/Blues Male Artist of the Year — and a Grammy nomination.

In December 2004, “Mustang Sally” and “In the Midnight Hour” were included in Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

Pickett is survived by his fiancee Gail Webb, sons Lynderrick and Michael, daughters Veda and Saphan, as well as an extended family of brothers and sisters.

Wilson Pickett\'s Greatest Hits

Click on the link for more information ..

Wilson Pickett (March 18, 1941 – January 19, 2006) was an American R&B and soul singer.

Pickett was born in Prattville, Alabama, and grew up singing in Baptist church choirs.

He was the youngest of 11 children and called his mother “the baddest woman in my book,” telling historian Gerri Hirshey “I get scared of her now. She used to hit me with anything, skillets, stove wood–(one time I ran away and) cried for a week. Stayed in the woods, me and my little dog.” Pickett eventually left to live with his father in Detroit.

Pickett began his musical career with The Falcons in the early 1959. In 1964, he signed as a solo artist with Atlantic Records and recorded “In the Midnight Hour” (1965), perhaps his best-remembered hit.

The genesis of “In the Midnight Hour” was a recording session on May 12, 1965 in which producer Jerry Wexler approached studio musicians Steve Cropper and Al Jackson (from Stax Records house band Booker T. and the M.G.’s) and said, “Why don’t you pick up on this thing here?” He performed a dance step. Cropper later explained in an interview that Wexler told them that “this was the way the kids were dancing; they were putting the accent on two. Basically, we’d been one-beat-accenters with an afterbeat; it was like ‘boom dah,’ but here this was a thing that went ‘um-chaw,’ just the reverse as far as the accent goes.” The song that resulted from this encounter established Pickett as a star and also gave Stax Records, for which Pickett recorded, a bona fide hit.

“Mustang Sally” and “Funky Broadway” followed, though Pickett’s biggest pop hit was “Land of 1000 Dances”. By the early 1970s, Pickett had released several more hits, including a cover of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” and a cover of “Sugar, Sugar” by The Archies. His last hit song was “Fire and Water” in 1972.

Pickett was also a popular songwriter, with songs he wrote recorded by such artists as Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, the Grateful Dead, Booker T. and the MGs, Genesis, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Hootie & the Blowfish, Echo & The Bunnymen, Roxy Music, Bruce Springsteen, Los Lobos, The Jam, Ani DiFranco, and more. …. continued …..

Barbra Streisand (born April 24, 1942) is an iconic American singer, theatre and film actress, composer, and film producer and director.

She was born Barbara Joan Streisand in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York then moved to another area in Brooklyn. Her father died when she was only 15 months old, and she had a lifelong turbulent relationship with her stepfather. Her well-intentioned mother did not encourage her daughter to pursue a show business career, opining that Barbara was not attractive enough. This criticism, many speculate, led to a lifelong insecurity about her appearance, despite enormous success in every facet of show business.

She was educated at Beis Yakov School and then famed Erasmus Hall High School, where she graduated fourth in her class, and overlapped by a year future collaborator Neil Diamond.

Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with the Columbia Records label. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut, The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theatre and nightclub standards, including her famously ironic version of “Happy Days Are Here Again”. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.

About: Siouxsie & the Banshees

Dreamshow

Click on the following link ..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siouxie_%26_The_Banshees

Siouxsie and the Banshees were a British gothic rock band. Their musical career also encompassed the punk and new wave genres.

The band was originally formed to fill an empty space on a bill at the first UK based ‘international punk rock festival’. This show was organised by Malcolm McLaren at the 100 Club in London’s Oxford Street on September 20th, 1976.

The initial line up consisted of ‘Bromley Contingent’ members Siouxsie Sioux (real name Susan Janet Dallion), Steven Severin (real name Steven Bailey aka Steve Spunker/Havoc), Marco Pirroni (later of Adam and the Ants and Rema Rema) and Sid Vicious (real name John Simon Ritchie), later of the Sex Pistols, on drums. On this occasion their set consisted of a lengthy and chaotic unrehearsed improvisation of “The Lord’s Prayer”, which also included lines from songs like “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”, “Smoke On The Water” and “Twist and Shout”.

“God it was awful” and “excruciating!” were two eye-witness accounts of their performance. This was not a unanimous view, however. A recording of the concert, though of relatively poor quality, demonstrates that the group gave a performance which commanded and repaid attention.

K.D. Lang - Live by Request

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K.d._lang

k.d. lang OC (without capital letters; birth name Kathryn Dawn Lang) (born November 2, 1961) is a Canadian singer and songwriter.

Lang was born in the small farming town of Consort, Alberta and grew up on the Canadian prairies. Singing at country and western venues in her homeland, she made several recordings that received good reviews and earned a 1985 Canadian Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist.

In 1986, she signed a contract with an American record producer in Nashville, Tennessee and received critical acclaim for her 1987 album, Angel with a Lariat. Her career received a huge boost when rock legend Roy Orbison chose her to record a duet of his standard, “Crying”. Instead of being overwhelmed by the power of Orbison’s three-octave voice, the two blended their tremendous vocal ranges into a riveting collaboration that won them the Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. Later that same year she would sing background vocals with Jennifer Warnes and Bonnie Raitt for Orbison’s acclaimed television special, Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night.

k.d. lang won the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her 1989 album, Absolute Torch and Twang. The single “Full Moon of Love” that stemmed from that album became a modest hit in the United States in the summer of 1989.

About: Aimee Mann

Aimee Mann - Live at St. Ann\'s Warehouse (Bonus CD)

Click on the following link ..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aimee_Mann

Aimee Mann (born September 8, 1960) is an American rock guitarist, bass player, singer, and songwriter.

Aimee Mann was born in Richmond, Virginia, and attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, but dropped out to sing with her first punk rock band, the Young Snakes; the band released the EP Bark Along with the Young Snakes in 1982, and a compilation album was issued in 2004.

In 1983, seeking a return to “sweetness and melody”, she co-founded with Berklee classmate and boyfriend Michael Hausman the new wave band ‘Til Tuesday, which achieved minor success in 1985 with its first album, Voices Carry. The title song is said to be inspired by Hausman and Mann’s breakup; the video became an MTV staple, winning the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, though Mann’s signature spiky hair would lead some to dismiss the group. Mann performed with the rock band Rush on the song “Time Stand Still” (from Hold Your Fire, 1987), singing backup vocals and appearing in the music video. With Mann playing an increasingly important role in songwriting, ‘Til Tuesday released two more albums, Welcome Home and Everything’s Different Now. On the final album and tour, musician Jon Brion joined the band, which broke up in 1990 when Mann left to start her solo career

News: 50 years on, spooky ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ reissued as a single

Fifty years ago, it was as haunting and wounded an opening line as rock ‘n’ roll had ever known — “Well, since my baby left me …”

Hector Saldana, San Antonio Express-News

50 years on, spooky ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ reissued as a single

Friday, January 13, 2006

Drenched in reverb, though not as much as memory might suggest, “Heartbreak Hotel” signaled Elvis Presley’s major label move to RCA Victor and onto the national radar when it was released on Jan. 27, 1956.

Sony BMG is commemorating the 50th anniversary of “Heartbreak Hotel” by re-releasing it as a single this week. A new deluxe box set, “Elvis 1 Singles,” arrives Jan. 24.

It didn’t sound anything like his pre-fame rockabilly singles for Sun Records. Gone, for the moment, was the slap-back tape echo perfected by Sam Phillips and the fast, rattling country and blues twang of a train running off the tracks.

But it was no less primal.

“It’s strange, it’s something you remember. It doesn’t sound like anything. It still doesn’t sound like anything anybody ever made,” said Sony BMG historian, producer and author Ernst Jorgensen, an expert on Presley’s RCA Victor catalog, recording dates and rare tapes.

But even Jorgensen wonders: “Is ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ even rock ‘n’ roll?”

The future king of rock ‘n’ roll — who would have turned 71 on Jan. 8 — certainly thought so.

So lonely he could die, Presley delivered the lyric with down-and-out believability. By the time Scotty Moore’s guitar solo comes in and the piano rises up in the bluesy mix, listeners know they never want to check in there.

But kids wanted to hear it again and again. It became Presley’s first No. 1 record.

Presley had just turned 21 when he cut the mono track live. RCA executives are said to have hated it. The day after “Heartbreak Hotel” was released, producers of Presley’s national television debut, on the Dorsey Brothers “Stage Show” on CBS, asked him to sing another song.

But Elvis believed in the song, written primarily by Mae Boren Axton and Tommy Durden. Jorgensen learned that Presley had even introduced “Heartbreak Hotel” from the stage at a small gig during Christmastime 1955, saying, “This is going to be my first hit record.”

Jorgensen, author of “Elvis Presley: A Life in Music — The Complete Recording Sessions,” said Presley “may have been the only believer.”

He was virtually unknown at the time outside of the hayride circuit and small roadhouses and county fairs in the South.

But radio listeners of the “Louisiana Hayride” knew him well.

One such listener was 17-year-old Barbara Jean McGarity Denecamp, who found herself face to face with Presley and his mother at a “Louisiana Hayride” concert in Shreveport, La., in November 1955.

She was participating in a stage contest called “Beat the Band.”

“All the way around to the back door, there were hundreds of screaming girls. You couldn’t even move,” Denecamp said.

Denecamp loved the spooky “Heartbreak Hotel,” but she initially was attracted to Elvis’ country element.

“Oh, I loved it. When he had Scotty Moore and Bill Black, the three-piece band was absolutely fabulous — the country sound,” she said.

The RCA hits followed in an avalanche. Ware remembered “Hound Dog” (the flip side was “Don’t Be Cruel”), which came later.

Tom Perryman was running KSIJ-AM in Gladewater, Texas, in the late ’40s and mid-’50s. His show was called the “Hillbilly Hit Parade.”

“The stuff he did for Sun Records was what we called catbilly,” Perryman said. “It wasn’t rock ‘n’ roll so much. We were hillbilly music. When that music came out with that beat, I was probably the only country station playing it in East Texas. Nobody knew what he was. He didn’t know what he was. Being from Memphis, he liked that black music and all.”

Perryman recalled booking Presley in October 1954, and the trio made all of $90.

“They didn’t have enough money to get out of Shreveport after the ‘Hayride.’ ”

Though he personified youthful rebellion, Presley was a well-mannered young man, Perryman said — despite his looking a bit like a Memphis peacock.

“He was good lookin’, a nice kid,” he said. “His hair wasn’t coal black. It was actually a dark dirty blond. But he was a phenomenon and it will never happen again. I knew then he had something besides that rockabilly.”

Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936–February 3, 1959), better known as Buddy Holly, was an American singer, songwriter, and a pioneer of Rock and Roll. The change of spelling of Holley to Holly came about because of an error in a contract he was asked to sign, listing him as Buddy Holly. That spelling was then adopted for his professional career.
